As you read the following summary of her occupational and educational history, you will learn why she sees your problems from your perspective. She will help you plan for the worst, but expect the best possible result of your application to Canada.

Those who know Fay Fuerst are very satisfied with the level of service, and the care with which she provides her legal representation to her clients.

As a result of this level of service, the most significant source of her business is referrals from satisfied clients. A small boutique immigration law practice is her method of offering a top quality service to all of her clients, applicants to Canada.

She came to the Law at the age of 30, after a wide range of educational experience which included;

  • English literature
  • French
  • Journalism
  • Political science
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Criminology

Fay commenced post secondary education at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in 1974 (now known as Ryerson University) in Journalism. Fay decided early that her creativity and people skills could not be harnessed by writing for only readers of newspapers.

Creative writing is still a personal hobby, and those strong written communication skills are the backbone of the success that Fay Fuerst has had, in representing all of her immigration clients, who emanate from around the world.

The somewhat harsh facts only journalist style of news reporting was not the right avenue for the finesse in language with which she painted the events as she learned about reporting in Journalism classes. Still, the journalism traditional “interview” techniques learned in this training unleashed her fundamental and strong people skills. These particular people skills have served her well in the task of investigating any and all options, and always garnering information from and to benefit all of those she meets with and interviews each day. Today, after 34 years of experience, her well honed skills of cutting through the superficial to find the core truth, serves her office and her clients well!

Then adamant to work in a profession which would include the people contact she loved; she went to The University of Toronto, where she enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts program in Sociology and Criminology. Learning much from the theoretical studies of the University life; yet craving practical experience; her enthusiasm drew her to various areas where she the volunteered to work getting the experience she wanted. Her vibrance and youthful (then!) energy allowed her to work full time and part time in various social work positions in the mid-70’s right through to 1982.

In addition to schooling, in the early 1980’s, Fay volunteered for the Toronto offices of the United Farm Workers, an American trade union famous for organizing agricultural workers in California, and also for International Ladies Garment Worker’s Union; an international union that organized lady garment workers in the U.S. Through this often difficult volunteer experience, over 7 years, she learned about the difficulties that faced many many workers from several & very different immigrant communities. In those times, not then a lawyer, she learned that their lives were difficult and tried to be of assistance in helping these immigrant workers navigate often uncertain terrain that comes from entering a new country and trying to find employment to maintain themselves and their families.

In 1982, one of her clients with special needs was arrested, and incurred criminal charges. Rather than to wash her hands of this client, as would have been the ‘easy’ approach, she pursued his problem to resolution, and learned about the services of a new agency (then called) the Toronto Bail Project at Old City Hall criminal courthouse in downtown Toronto. The first person who met with Fay recognized her spirit and her outstanding people skills; referring her directly to the Director of the program who agreed immediately that she should commence employment. A recent example of her outstanding experience came from this website, where one man whom she dealt with in this time period, saw this website after returning to his home country. He recently contacted her, having retained a business card that she gave him 24 years ago. This job had both social work and criminal justice aspects, and in 1984-85, Fay changed her focus from the social work aspect to the criminal justice system side. The daily experience in the criminal court drew her interests to the legal profession. In the summer of 1985 she decided that law school was the next step for her.

Entering law school in September, 1986, she never left her contacts with social agencies, and the community. While the first year of the curriculum of law school was somewhat challenging, Fay continued her involvement in the community agencies while studying at Osgoode Hall Law School; as an example, she was a Member of the Board of Directors for Neighbourhood Legal Services from 1984-1988.

Called to the Bar in Ontario in 1991, having articled in the area of criminal law, Fay decided initially to practice Criminal Law. Her antecedents of social work, and the ever changing faces of downtown Toronto with the increasing numbers of immigrants entering Canada, taught her quickly that her clients had many needs; and an overwhelming number of them had immigration issues, and sometimes problems. Initially, learning about the immigration problems and the system through her representations of refugees at the Immigration Refugee Board in Toronto, Fay has been very successful in representing refugees from virtually all refugee producing areas in the world. She has specific expertise with the claims from the South East Asian countries, and even been retained by refugees from countries which seldom produce refugees. She has developed an expertise in certain countries, and specifically in certain claims, based on specific issues, and knows the courage that is demonstrated time and again when a person leaves their home and their families to seek protection from persecution. She personally chooses a select few of the cases to work on when the refugee claimant(s) come to seek her services.
